HELLEBORUS ORIENTALIS
The Lenten Rose
These beautiful free flowering
perennial plants bloom from
mid/late winter to early Spring.
The majority of hybrids we are
offering were raised by Ernest
Raithby, Dip. Hort., a Yorkshire
Nurseryman now living at Goole,
who had been breeding and growing
Hellebores for over twenty years,
and from whom we obtained the
collection on his retirement.
We have continued to breed and
propagate these named varieties.
Hellebores prefer a moist but
drained humus rich soil of around
P.H. 6.5 - 7, in a partially
shaded position; although they
will grow in a open position
and tolerate dry conditions
when well established. Mulch
well with garden compost, well
rotted manure or mushroom compost.
Grown well, plants can grow
into very large clumps with
masses of flowers.
Hellebores do not like being
moved, but if you do need to
move a plant, wait until the
plant has finished flowering
around May/June, lifting it
with as much soil as possible
so as not to damage too many
roots. Re-plant into a manured
and well prepared position,
mulch well and keep well watered
all summer.
During a wet season, as a precaution
against stem rot and leaf spot,
spray several times with a suitable
fungicide. It is a good idea
to cut away and burn any old
foliage in December if it is
in bad condition because of
black spot. This will help to
prevent it spreading on to new
foliage. |
