The specie Pelargonium is a
half hardy shrub first collected
in South Africa and brought
to Britain in the mid seventeenth
century by sailing ships from
the Dutch East Indies Company.
We now have four distinct groups
of Pelargonium from no more
than 20 different species,
from over 200 collected, and
by the hybridisation done by
head gardeners of wealthy landowners
in the 18th century. From spontaneous
sporting, sub groups have developed,
such as Angel, Double Zonal,
Miniature, Dwarf, Cactus, Miniature
and Stellar.
Most Pelargoniums like a sunny
aspect and can be grown in
pots, hanging baskets, window
boxes and open ground. In the
right compost and fed regularly
with a high potash feed they
will flower from spring right
through to late autumn. Protect
from frost during the winter
months they will continue to
thrive for many years.
Nomenclature: The Botanical
name of the plants featured
in this section is Pelargonium.
We do not use the name Geranium
at all, although they are often
referred to as this. The name
Geranium rightfully belongs
to a group of hardy herbaceous
plants native to Great Britain,
Northern Europe and North America. |
