Welcome to Fibrex Nurseries - home of the National Pelargonium Collection and the National Hedera Collection.
Fibrex is a family business, established by Hazel & Dick Key over 57 years ago.
Although Hazel & Dick are no longer with us, the business is now in the capable hands of their daughters Ursula, Angela, son Richard and his wife Heather. Ours is a truly family affair with Helena, another of Hazel & Dick's daughters, looking after the Pelargonium Collection through the summer & autumn months. Cherry, Ursula's daughter makes it a 3rd generation family company, as she is now in the office helping Wendy, who along with Sandra & Eileen have worked with us for so long now they may as well be family. Sue is still a newcomer as she has only worked here for 10 years! This year we welcomed two more newbies into the fold, Marcus & Nicola who we hope will be with us for many years to come.
Still situated in the heart of the beautiful Warwickshire countryside, the nursery now boasts a much expanded range of plants, a hugely successful mail order service and an excellent reputation on the Flower Show Exhibition circuit. We also welcome visitors to the nursery to browse through a vast range of plants available for immediate sale.
Our nursery is run on simple principles, mainly to grow the best quality plants that we can and as a family of collectors we like variety, which means there is a lot to choose from.
From March the 1st to August the 31st we are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
From September the 1st to February the 28th we are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.
We are only open at the weekend during "Pellie Season". This runs from April the 1st to June the 25th, Saturday & Sunday, 10.30am to 4pm.
The National Collection of Pelargoniums
The National Collection of Pelargoniums has become the largest of its kind in the world encompassing as it does both cultivars and species. Although the main body of the collection is held within the main collection house, in truth it is spread across the entire nursery, the glass houses overflowing with colour and spilling out into large tubs outside throughout the summer months showing the true diversity of this wonderful genus. With over 2000 varieties on show you will never see another collection quite like it. Open to the public from May to September & free of charge.
The National Collection of Hedera
The National Collection of Hedera is kept with our Show Ivies. There are 390 varieties in the collection showing a tremendous range of foliage types, habits & uses. Ivies are not only necessary for a healthy environment as they clean the air we breath, they are also essential for our native wild life. But putting all of its environmental credentials aside, ivy can be very beautiful if used in the right context.
We encourage any person who thinks ivies are an unkempt garden menace to go take a look and see what can be done with these versatile gems.
The collection of ferns at Fibrex is well know in the pteridological world and so it should be as it is quite possibly the largest, most extensive commercial collection of hardy ferns in the UK. Here you can browse through our show ferns to get inspiration for your own fernery, then purchase younger versions having got the advice needed for getting the right fern for the right spot.
Named Tuberous Begonias
Should you come browsing in the summer or autumn you can't help but notice the Begonias in all their blousey glory.
We now have a fairly large range of geraniums on offer. Please don't confuse these with Pelargoniums as is so often the case at Garden Centres. They are not the same thing! These are herbaceous perennials and make a lovely addition to any cottage garden.
Our newest addition to the nursery is our collection of tropical Hibiscus. These have been gathered together over the last 15 years from the 4 corners of the globe and is the only commercial collection of Hibiscus in the country.
Fibrex has been a regular at RHS Chelsea for over 50 years, at Hampton Court, Gardeners World Live and our local show Malvern Spring & Autumn since they began, as well as many of the regional flowers shows throughout the year. If visiting the nursery, you can see the vast array of awards that have been collected in the last 50 plus years, stapled with pride to the packing shed walls.
Fibrex has a well established mail order service that has been successfully dispatching healthy, happy plants across the UK and Europe for many years. So many years in fact that we can remember dispatching plants by British Rail!.
Pelargoniums are grown to order. They are grown in 6cm biodegradable pots, rolled up in paper sleeves and fit snugly into purpose made boxes ensuring they cannot move in transit. Please note, the plants we send out Are Not "Plugs". They are young plants.
Ferns, Hedera & Geraniums. These are all grown in 9cm pots. Once the root ball is well established and we feel the plants are able to move home safely they are removed from their pots, rolled up into their own paper sleeves & as with the Pelargoniums, tucked snugly into purpose made boxes.
Begonia corms are sent out already growing, rather than dormant, to make sure that the corms you receive are viable. They will need to be potted on straight away. Cultural notes are sent with the corms so you will know exactly what to do.
The conservatory plants and tropical Hibiscus are grown in 9cm pots which are removed upon dispatch as with all other plants from the nursery, wrapped in compostable bags, and newspaper and snugly tucked up in their boxes.
In all cases, we do our best to make sure that the plants get to you in the same condition as they leave the nursery.
Retail sales direct from the nursery
It is important to point out that although it is of course easy to sit in your chair at home, choosing your plants to be sent directly to your door (almost Amazon style) you will always get a better selection here in the nursery. The variety we are able to provide here far outstrips that which we can offer for mail order. There are of course, all those lovely little rarities that we hide away in the nursery that you might otherwise never get to see... We are a full production nursery and we are happy for you to come and see the plants being grown from cutting to finished plant. You don't get that very often these days! And of course there are the special offers that we have in the nursery to make that drive worth while as well as the advice we can give, which is second to none on all of our products.
Coach Parties & Guided Tours
Coach parties from gardening clubs and other horticultural organisations are also welcome. We give a guided tour of the nursery and the two National Collections. Talks and demonstrations can also be arranged and refreshments - tea/coffee & home made cakes - are available upon request. Please call the office on 01789 720788 to book a group visit stating your requirements, or use the Contact Now button to send us a message.
